Looking for Mauser K98 sniper ballistic info

    First Post

I am looking for muzzle velocity info for for 198 grain Mauser K98K sniper rounds. I am looking to load or buy non-corrosive ammo to shoot my S/243 Borsigwalde w/ a variant of the ZF39 scope. I am looking to match the BDC adjustment. I am in the process of mounting a Cole distributors replica in place of the original which is foggy to say the least. I didn't want to damage the original scope any further. The Cole Dist. replica appears to be near the same as the original Any help would be appreciated.

The ammunition that was meant for sniping use was not made in large quantities - so little in fact few snipers ever new it exhisted. Anyhow the sniping ammo and standard ball ammo will be identical ballisitcally , just th esniping ammo much like 7,9 made for certain aircraft MG's was made to finer tolerances.
So you are taking a reproduction sniper that has foggy original optics and are going to use a repop scope on it for shooting.I'd sell off the "original scope" and keep a repop on the repop rifle and blaze away.

      Gew98,
Thanks for the info. The rifle is in great shape and has a good bore. I have 3 modern tactical rifles and thought a WW2 era shooter would be fun to compare to them. Selling the scope is a good idea. I'll shoot some photos when completed. The S/243 rifle has most of the serial numbers matching, 280 proof marks, laminant stock, and still has the cleaning rod. I guess it is OK as war time Mausers are concerned.

If your rifle was not an import marked peice it's a shame someone knocked it up with a repop scope setup. Oh well that's just one less collectable 98k and one more shooter mauser out there.
There are a handfull of outfits out there now making repop 98k snipers using those russian reworked 98k's . Which to me is fine as the russian reworked 98k's have little collector value ( refinished and totally mismatched ). If you go to gunboards.com and or G/K43.com you should post in their trader forums about wanting to swap/sell your potentially original scope toward/for a repop to go with your repop sniper.

The S/ 243 rifle doesn't have any import marks on it. So I guess some one did drill and tap it for the LSR mount and scope some where back a while ago. I recently purchased Backbone of the Wehrmacht volumes 1 and 2 as my intrest in this rifle has grown. I received Volume 1 and should have volume 2 any day. I have and still own a few US military firearms and a few foreign that were bring backs that I am sure of the lineage. This one was a low budget project that I stepped into and now have an intrest in WW2 German weapons. I bought this one for $360 with the scope on it. I am an engineer by trade and have inspected the triggergard, floor plate , etc. and all appears milled. There are both types of eagles and the 280 waffenamts where they are suppose to be according to volume 1. The LSR has the locking screws holding the mounting screws just like on the trigger guard. I disassembled it and checked the threads and they are an M5X.8 which I though would have been a SAE. I guess someone may have butchered a decent rifle. The bore even looks good through a bore scope.

Back to the ammo. I plan on using Austrian Hirtenberger 197 grain boat tail ammo till I start loading for it. I will chrongraph this ammo. I believe I want to be at 2490 fps. to match the BDC of the repop scope.

On another note I will have to post a picture of my grandfather in his WW1 uniform to see if the uniform can be identified. It is one of those convex oval pictures with pait touch up on it.

This is a great site with lots of knowledgeable people. I appreciate the help.
