need help on arisaka

hi guys,
i am in the process of having this gun shipped as we speak. it was bought from a vet family along with a japanese flag that i have already received and believe to be real. I have no doubts on the gun, but one. it doesnt seem to have a groove in the stock while all others i have seen do. ill post my gun first and then a pic of a stock with a groove second . the shape is good etc... just this one little thing is bothering me. does it still look ok?

the grooves ive seen are from about the rear site up to wear the sling connect to. might not be same gun type but the groove is there.

It's a late war variation.....To simplify and speed up production.....I see the rear sight is a non-adjustable "peep" sight (late war feature) and without the adjustable aircraft sight (earlier feature)......Bodes

sorry my skills are bad, but you get the point between those two arrows should be a groove. i thought this was zoomed in more. sorry

Is the top handguard missing from the front or is it supposed to be like that as it is of late war manufacture?

from the pics im looking at in a book, i think its supposed to be like that. i think it is a late war 40s series according to this book

It looks like the mum was ground off of the receiver but complete otherwise.

It is series 27, so it is a Tokyo Juki Kogyo made rifle under Nagoya supervision, it also has a small recoil bolt on a late war stock, which is how I can tell a TJK apart from any other rifle.

The rifle you have pictured with the finger grooves is a type 38, what you have is a late war type 99. And contrary to popular belief, late war type 99s are as safe to shoot as early rifles, I would have it checked out by a gunsmith just incase(with any kind of WWII rifle, not just late war ones).

Does the bolt match?

I am not completely confident that the stock hasnt been sanded, the edges on the stock dont look as sharp as they should be and are actually quite rounded. Ask the vets family if the stock had been sanded.

Late war stocks were generally rather rough.....I believe it's been sanded.....And minus the "mum" means it wasn't a field pickup.....Bodes

yes the bolt matches. i will ask again about the sanding. the daughter in law im buying it from said as far as she knows it has sat in a closet until now wrapped in a japanese flag. she did comment that it looked like it was abused as far as the stock. she mentions there are a few small dents and scratches. here is the flag it was wrapped in.

i talked to her and everything was as i thought. matching bolt looks like 717? and that is the last three #s on the barrel and gun has not been touched as far as she knows. here are some more pics
