    G33/40 Question

    Hello,
I recently purchased this G33/40 at a local gun show. I guess it was more of an impulse buy than anything since I don't know much about the gun. The gun is in pretty bad shape right now. If I were to refinish the stock would it reduce the value of the gun?
I really am not one to mess with old relics like this. Usually I leave well enough alone and keep things original. I am very good at refurbishing stocks and can also reblue gun metal if need be. I was just wondering if it would diminish the value of the gun if I refurbished the stock.

        Thanks

I know the sling is not original I just bought it to carry it around the show. I am currently looking for one that would be close to original.

I paid $600.00 US dollars for it. Might be a little much but like I said it was an impulse buy at the time.

All-matched #'d ones in nice condition are in the $2K+ range......Bolt on yours is not a G33/40 one.....Those had a hollowed out bolt knob......You did okay......Bodes

Refinishing the stock would kill the value big time. Collectors would much rather have a stock that shows honest wear vs. one that has been pimp-shined.

I recently bought one in decent condition (excepting a crack in the stock) that was a bolt m/m but otherwise matching for $785. I'd say you did okay considering the incorrect bolt.

If you say you want it in closest to original condition, then why would you want to refinish it? Thats like saying you bought a SKS because you wanted an AR15.

By the way you have a very nice rifle.

As the others have indicated you did just fine at $600.

For comparison, a barreled action, with a 98k bolt and without any wood or bands just went for $530.

Legitimate, unsanded matching 33/40's have started to exceed the $4k mark with reputable dealers. I know. Hard to believe but its true. This one with a matching bolt but a MM and sanded stock just hit $2k!

The wood is rough but if it is matching you really did well.

Listen to what the guys have said, do not sand the stock.

I agree, keep the rifle just the way it is. Even though you are good at refinishing, you really want to keep that original, combat finish.

Gun does look a bit rough, but I agree that you should leave it as is. Any enhancement to it, will certainly lower the value.
                        Is it all matching?

Matching G33/40s are very tough to find these days.

                          Finding a decent 33/40 at all isn't a cakewalk.

I will definitely leave this rifle in its original condition.
Where on this rifle can I find the serial number other than on the receiver?

                            Thanks for all the replys,

                            Matt

Barrel, bolt, receiver, stock, and handguard off the top of my head...
