Very interesting gun, I have never even heard of it before
I would assume that it is identical to a "regular" MP40 except Mag Housing, which accepts 2 mags instead of 1.

Every MG that fires from an open bolt like these, will have a tendency to rise on you.

It is easy enough to switch magazines, but I think it makes the gun too bulky and heavy.

Every MG that is fired from the shoulder, closed bolt OR open, will have a tendency to rise. With burst fire, recoil is cumulative, rather than bang/recover, bang/recover. This effect is exacerbated by people standing in an offhand rifle style stance which makes it easy for the gun to do this at the same time as drifting to one side. Try having your feet side to side rather than one behind the other, knees bent, and keep your shoulders square to the target rather than one further back than the other. (Think isosceles stance vs. Weaver stance) If you then lean a bit forward and keep your weight on the balls of your feet, you will find that the "up and to the right" effect is canceled. It's the stance people are using that makes it do this; ask a lefty if he does not have an "up and to the left" problem....it's because the gun will move in the direction of whichever shoulder is to the rear of the other, which is connected to which foot is behind the other. Square them both to the target and hunch forward and you can just hose a target with no controllability issues. A bit of practice and you can even do it with 7.62mm.

I LOVE the MP40. It's just so SMOOTH, none other quite like it. I have no idea what Grandpa was talking about, as alluded, it sure sounds like he's either talking about a different gun or never actually shot one. Veterans absolutely NEVER tell war stories to civilians, of course.....

You are an extremely lucky man indeed to own a very rare MP40. Next you need an FG42........

When I am supervising people who are shooting full auto at the range I stand directly behind them with a hand on their shoulder. I push them forward while they're shooting. If I didn't they'd be spraying the ceiling by the time they got to the bottom of a magazine.

Wouldn't we all. They are super rare sir, as I am sure you know. And a very attractive weapon as well. Kind of has a sexy thing going for it.

That is one killer piece you have my friend. I doubt highly that there are more that 2 or 3 legally registered in this configuration. There are more FG-42'S I would imagine on the registry.
