Hi,
I'm not an expert. But.. if before the serial number, there is an 'X', that means that it has been re-used by the ex East Germany Army.
But it's still a MP44 build during WWII.
Anyway, have a look on the marking: MP44 or STG44 or anything else, the fabrication date, if all the pieces have the same number, the potential rust aso.
That's all I could tell you.
Don't hesitate to post some pictures of it before or after you find it.
Best regards

As far as I remember 4 countries remarked (changed and/or added other markings) the MPs: East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and there were also some with arabic and israeli markings.
Below you have two examples of how rework may look like
New serial number
TRZ (yugo) marking on the stock
Hope it helps

Besides the number markings, all the reworked guns that I have seen the selectors, bolts and bolt carriers (there may be a a couple other small parts which I can't remember off the top of my head) are blued when they should be in the white. All these rework guns were dip blued just like the import P.38's.

May be you are right?

So to see traces of rework is like the k98, first look the serial number, it must be on the bolt and other pieces, with the same numbers( i mean made with the same tools )..Second look at the firing pin of the barrel, if it's not like mine of the photo, it could means that the barrel is replaced.Third the blueing, if looks relatively new, probably it has been reblued, the mp 44 normally have seen a lot of wearing, but not all of them.
I hope this helps you

I took it from this forum, sorry, I forgot to put a note about it. Your MP was more like an example how the rework (I mean, changing the s/n) may look like.

Just out of interest:
After talking with an old guy of unquestionable source he told me that in the 50s-60s Tito sent 3,000 MP44 and alot of other kit to Eygpt to make freinds and more kit and Mp44 to Palestine. And, get this, on the side many "volunteers" from the former 13th SS and former partisans went to palestine under official sanction to fight aiding the arabs. The thing was from what he said those two ended up fighting each other more then the enemy!
Best,
Pete

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned yet I don't think is that some (East German?) have an extra front sling attachment on the left hand side.
Mine is an East German one (I think?) and has this, and the mag is also marked MP44 and 1001 which I believe is signs of it being East German? It has from what I remember no altered markings and all the original manufacturers codes, waffenampts etc are still there.
Mine is a 1944 dated MP44.

Mark which looks like a dent, when magnified looks a bit like a large petaled flower head.
Post war mag on the left.
