Colt 1911 of 1918

Hello all - just picked up my first 1911 at a local auction. I'd always wanted one of these, but never did any research before this one came up. Not much of a pistol collector really (I've got a 1944 dated P-38). Now that I've got it, I was able to do some research and see that it dates from October 1918. Total cost with fees was about $1200. Any thoughts on how I did based on these photos? It looks to have been kept fairly dry, rarely shot (bore is shiny).

Wow - guess it was a good deal then. THere was a similar one in the auction that only had five digits in the serial number - it went for $1900.

A quick question for knowledgeable Colt 1911 owners - all the other 1911 that I have seen have the horse at the rear of the slide, not in between the lettering... should I be concerned?

No, that is acceptable on the early ones. Good pistol at a great price BTW!

No. The Colt was moved from the rear of the serrations to between the patent legend about SN 275,000.

Many thanks to both of you for your info - that's a relief.

I recently picked up a Glock 19, and joined a local gun club. I'm looking forward to taking lessons (never fired a pistol before!) and trying out the 1911, the Glock, and a 1944-dated P-38 that I've had for a few years.

Before you shoot the antique Colt (and this is advice I did not take when I acquired mine, which was made in 1917), consider that these early ones sometimes suffered cracked slides, and parts are difficult to find and expensive.

I would like to have your opinion about my Colt 1911 Commercial which I bough a couple of years ago. Serial No 48489
From what I have found out on the web this Colt was made 1913. Is it correct.
I found it in its original box with an original magazine and these booklets that you can see on the picture.

Pas de croix- You must have looked up the serial for the M1911 (Military) and not the Government Model (Civilian). The M1911 (Military) serial No. 48489 was made in 1913 - Colt Government Model (Civilian) C48489 was made in 1916.

The C prefix is for "Commercial" (Civilian Sales).

Your pistol looks OK. The box is actually quite valuable so do not store the pistol in the box, ever! It looks like somone tried to use WD40 to protect it with the usual disastrous results. All in all though a nice pistol.
