    Italian youth rifle

I have just recieved a rifle that I believe is an Italian youth carbine from the fascist regime of Mussolini. I haven't had the time to take pictures yet. It is a very small rifle and it has a dull folding bayonet. The cleaning rod is contained in the butt of the gun. Condition is very good. The only thing missing is the magazine. It is still being searched for. My question is this...is this rare and how much would one of these oddities be worth? Firearms are not my specialty. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Youth Rifle

    ADLER:
I HAD ONE OF THOSE I TRADED FOR A JAP RIFLE THAT AN UNCLE BROUGHT BACK FROM IWO, STILL KICKIN MY SELF OVER THAT STUPID TRADE, HOW EVER THERE WAS NO MAG. IT USES A STRIPPER CLIP THAT FALLS OUT OF THE BOTTOM
OF THE RIFLE WHEN EMPTY, IF YOU HAVE THE SAME ONE, THAT IS HOW IT WORKS. I BELIEVE IT IS CALLED A MANLICHER STYLE ITALIAN YOUTH RIFLE
AND IT DID HAVE A FOLDING BAYO. HAD A LOUD REPORT LARGE MUZZLE FLASH
WHEN I FIRED IT. NOT WORTH A LOT OF MONEY, THE THROW AWAY CLIPS I THINK ARE AROUND. THE RIFLE MAY BE RARE BUT NOT WORTH MUCH MONEY
DUE TO THE SIMPLE CONSTRUCTION. DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, LET SOME ONE ELSE CHIME IN. fIND OUT THE CALIBRE, THERE IS A SUB CAL YOUTH RIFLE THAT LOOKS LIKE THE STANDARD MODEL, THAT ONE MAY BE WORTH SOME THING MORE AS IT IS SOME WHAT RARER. THE STANDARD CAL WAS A 6.5 CAL
THE SUB CAL WAS SMALLER. GEOPOP

Have not a clue what Geo was on about.

The Youth rifle does use a shorter version of the 6,5 carcano cartridge and is scalled down overall dimensionally than the M91 moschetto carbine it is patterned after. These are scarce and worth a good bit more than a standard Moschetto carbine. The mannlicher magazine design used on italian carcano rifles is like that of gew88 and Austrian M95 rifles. The cartridges are held in a mannlicher clip that is inserted into tha magazine from the top and locks into place - thus becoming part of the magazine. When the last round is chambered the mannlicher clip simply drops out the bottom of the magazine housing.

Gew98 Just Repeated What I Just Said, The Shorter Version Of The Youth Rifle Would Most Likely Be Worth More Than The Standard
Youth Rifle. Here Is A Scan Taken From "small Arms Of The World"
Dated 1948. Check The Rifle Out And Figure Out Which One You Have!
The Standard One 2nd From The Top Is The One I Had, The Bottom One Is The Much Shorter One. It Also Uses A 6.5 But A Shorter Round, According To Picture.

The model you had (second from top) was not a youth rifle. It is, I believe the Mod. 91 cavalry carbine. The rifle at bottom is indeed the youth rifle.
I have seen very few of these around. perhaps some of our members (perhaps Bill) has one and would be willing to post photos.

          Cheers,
          Johnnie

At every italian show I visit I see 2 or 3 each time at least - but I never asked for a price.

              JOHNNIE:
APPARENTLY YOU ARE CORRECT, THE CONFUSION ABOUT THE GENUINE YOUTH RIFLE CAME FROM WHEN I GOT MINE. I WAS TOLD BY THE GUY WHO HAD IT THAT IT WAS INDEED AN ITALIAN YOUTH RIFLE. BUT THE REAL YOUTH RIFLE IS THE SMALLER ONE, THAT MAKES MORE SENSE. SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION, IT WAS IN 1953 THAT I PICKED THAT ONE UP. IT WAS QUICKLY UNLOADED, NO JOKE INTENDED!!! I THOUGHT THERE WERE TWO VERSIONS OF THE YOUTH RIFLE.

Yes. I have the small one on the bottom of the picture. My son and daughter even say it is small for them. For sure it is the Youth Rifle. Any value ideas yet?

The Italian youth carbine (Moschetto Ballila) was 2/3 the size of a standard Italian m-91 carbine with folding bayonet.. It held a six (6) round clip which was a small version of the standard carcano clip.. The ctgs. were only blanks.. The clip and the ctgs. are much rarer than the rifle.. The type 91 Carcano with folding bayonet is often confused as a youth carbine....BILL

Thanks. I appreciate the help. I just have to find the clip. It is in my Brother in laws attic. That's where I picked it up last night. Any idea of a price I should ask for it. I may sell this rifle. I have interest in other aspects of collecting. Just came across this and thought I should g rab it.

I would suspect that palcing a value on this one would be difficult. Although probably fairly rare, you would have to find a Carcano collector who has most of the basic models and needs this one to round out a collection.
I would suggest doing a thourough internet search to see if any have been recently for sale and what they went for.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

                        Cheers,
