    sniper k-98

I have a claw mount byf k-98. However it hase some marks on it that I can not find in any books. On the top of the barrel just in front of the bolt are the letters (ED) The other wierd thing is that it doesn't have a bayonet lug or cleaning rod. In their place is a metal housing that looks to me as though it belongs to the gun. All the numbers on the gun match. Any ideas?

I think a picture would say more than a 1000 words

There were some 1944 that came without bayonet holder. But you don't say what year it is?

ED could be a barrel maker? Are the letters stylished/shaped to form a symbol?

Ill try to get some pics up soon. The ED stamps are just plain letters. There is a mark after that looks like 2 or 3 letters in a shield but I can't make them out.

eagle stamp. The hole is through the butt plate. All the other k-98s I own have the hole throught the stock itself.

The stock is from a bnz45 Kriegsmodell - steyr. The pic quality is way too bad to tell anything else. If the action is straight up oberndorf proofed the chances of it being legit are then almost zero.

I almost sure that the three letters in the shield are bnz steyr markings as well. What are the thoughts on the ED stamp? Also how can you tell the stock is a steyr?

Why do you think that the rifle is a byf? As stated the wood and the barrel are looking like bnz products? What are the waA stamped numbers?

The ED marking is simply the supplier of the barrel, itas nothing to do with the rifle's use or issue.

I for one would really like to see clear close ups of the scope and mount from a few angles.

It looks as though it is a bnz offset single claw sniper and problably a 1945 date.

I agree that this one may have a chance. We will have some better photos to make a real assesment.

Why do I say it is byf... because in your very first posting and first sentence you say you have a byf claw mount. Better pics would of course be the ticket here.

What a dope. I did say it was a byf. Don't know what I was thinking about. It is bnz marked. I will get some scope and better marking pics up on wednesday. Thanks for all the feed back

Personally, I have a bad feeling about it. I have yet to see a single claw sniper made that late in the war- the ED code is usually found on bnz45's in the r-s block? I agree that more pics would be nice.
