in ww 1 i saw a lot of water cooled barrels . in ww2 no water cooled barrels. but i know the barrels overheated and a lot of germans got killed changing barrels that were overheated. why did water cooled lose favor to the need to change barrels? why not keep w c barrels or were they not so good either? The reason for the switch from water to air cooled machine guns is that the water cooled MGs needed a lot of water and that made it heavy is hell (up to 35 kilos), plus you couldn't use a bipod, you needed a tripod wich made the gun even heavier,about 50 kilos, and that just wasn't practical for the Blitzkrieg, but it was ok for trench warfare.
