P38 and mag, re-united after 60 years. Almost.

Hi guys, here's an interesting story.

I bought my first P38 a while back via e-stand. A nice AC44 with matching serial numbers, except for the mag, which is a zero series.

I went to the P38 forum (www.p38forum.com) to see if I could register my serial numbers and, on the off-chance, find the matching gun for my mag, or vice versa.

There was a post up – a guy had recently visited Cabela’s (for non-US readers Cabela’s is hunting/fishing chain in the US). He had noted down the serial numbers of the P38s they were selling in one of their stores and duly relayed them to forum followers.

And one of them matched my mag – 09873. The gun was for sale at $2999.

I posted a reply and was then contacted via the P38 forum by a guy who expressed interest in buying my mag and re-uniting it with its original gun.

He called Cabela’s and got some photos e-mailed over to him. Turns out the gun is somewhat over priced and doesn’t warrant such a high price tag. Fair enough.

Still, nice to know the original gun is still in one piece somewhere.

I even called Cabela’s to see if they’d want to buy the mag off me. They said they’d think about it. That was a week ago. I’m assuming it’s a ‘no thanks.’ I don’t think they realise the significance of it.

Frankly, I'd look into buying it myself but firearms laws over here in the UK are prohibitive. I dread to think how I'd first go about de-activating it and then importing it. All from 5,000 miles away.

So, if anyone’s looking to get hold of a zero series P38 with original mag, you know where to start looking.

    Chris

I actually had this same thing happen to me about 5 years ago. I had the mag, and another guy had the gun. I sold the mag to the guy for a fair price, and he didn't hesitate at all! I was more than happy to help him out!

A friend of mine just had the same thing happen to him as well. Only in this case he found the gun! The gun was overpriced, so he didn't buy it, but asked the guy if he wanted to buy the matching mag off of him? He didn't!!!!! He thought the mag was priced too high so he didn't buy it!! (what an idiot!! ) Anyways, the guy ended up selling the gun at the Tulsa show this year. My friend had given him his buisness card in case he changed his mind, and wanted to buy the mag. He ended up giving the buisness card to the buyer of the gun, and he called my friend up, and of course he purchased the magazine! He couldn't believe that dealer didn't buy it before he sold him the gun!!

        So yes, this does happen!
I'm looking for the P38 that is in Per Mathisons' book. It's an AC40 with maching mag. The reason I would like to get it, is because I also have an AC40 with matching magazine, and it's sequentially numbered to the one shown in Per's book!!!!!!!

If anyone knows where it is, please let me know!!

          Good Luck with that Matt!
I have located two rifles that are consecutively numbered to rifles in my collection. One is a 1933 Mauser Banner DRP and the other is an 8.15x46Rmm Tyrolean Standschutzen Verband. I can't seem to get either party interested in selling.

Maybe not consecutive SNs, but I found an M79 revolver issued to 10.A.r.3.16 at a show and about 15 yrs later found another issued to 10 A.r.3.15 at the same show...

              Denny,

Yea, I know, but hey, it's worth a shot right? Worst case is, I don't get it.

Wow, wonderful thread. Now I've really been thinking about a P38 I bought many years ago. It's mismatched, the frame down matches, and the slide up matches. Why the two got mismatched at some point in time I don't know. It's got an interesting story, but to keep this short, I'm only the third owner here in the states. It would be interesting to know if I could find at least one of the other halves somewhere else and make one complete again.

If you've not already done so, a good place to start finding a match would be www.p38forum.com.

There's a guy that manages the site who keeps records of just about every P38 serial number he comes into contact with. You can post your numbers up and he'll cross-ref and log them.

Good luck - let us know how you get on.
