    Remington 1911A1

    Hi guys,

This is the first US pistol in my collection and i have to say i'm very happy with it. All i know about 1911A1's comes from books and internet but i think i have a nice, all original example. S/N should put it in 1943.

I'll let the pictures do the talking altough the pistol looks much better in real life.

Feel free to comment, all opinions etc are welcome !

    Kris

Very nice. Original G.I. 1911s are becoming harder to find. Be advised though that very few are actually original 100%. These were rebuilt many times over and the depots used whatever parts were in the bin. I worked at a small arms repair shop in Hawaii and refitted Remington slides to Colt frames with all manner of manufactured barrels and small parts.
I believe that the HS on your barrel means it was made by High Standard, but it has been awhile and I could be wrong.
A very nice 1911 though and it looks a keeper. Congrats.

                      Cheers,
                      Johnnie

                        Hi Johnnie,

                        Thanks for your info.
I understand your point but i think it's difficult to know if it has been refit or not. Maybe it was left in Belgium after the war and never refitted ? Maybe it was sold in the '70/80/90ies and refitted... who will say

                        Best regards,
                        Kris

One way to tell is find a reference and see who made the frame(from the serial number). You can probably find this on the internet. If it is other than a Remington frame, its a rebuild. Also, I am pretty sure that I am remembering that HS stands for High Standard which was (maybe still is) a gun manufacturing company in the States. If I am remembering correctly and the barrel is a High Standard, then it is definately a rebuild. Unfortunately all my reference books are in storage in the States, but perhaps some other members can verify the barrel markings.
Its a nice pistol no matter what, and the vast majotity of millitary 1911s are rebuilds, many more than once, totally complete original ones in nice shape are pretty scarce.

                          Regards,
                          Johnnie

                            Hi guys,

The pistol over all looks fine. High Standard did indeed make the barrel and they were fitted to Remington Rand pistols at the factory(along with other barrels, High Standards are even found on Ithaca's etc.). The only piece I see that gives me pause is the slide release. In the picture it looks like it is lightly blued and it should be parkerised. As I said it is based on the picture so I could very well be wrong. All in all a nice looking pistol.
