      FG42

      Henry,

The main sources claim that only around 7000-10000 FG 42´s were actually made. Very few still exists and mostly are in advanced or museum collections and they are seldom seen for sale.

The price range is also awesome: something between US$ 25,000 up to 60,000. Pretty much for me! So I´ll keep on shooting it only while I play Return to Castle Wolfenstein!!

Anyway it is for sure a fantastic weapon!

Hope it helps you a little.

      Regards,

      Douglas.

            Willi,

            YOU lucky S.O.B.!!!!
That is my favorite gun of WWII! and I have only seen two (up close and in person) in my entire life.

I've seen about 4-5 more in museums like the FBI arsenal, US Army ordnance museum, and the Chaplain Fighter museum in Arizona.

Willi, you have to let me know how that baby shoots! and please send pics of both the guns, and you shooting them if possible! Thanks,
            Matt

Will do Matt.....I am sure KSM will take plenty of pictures too........

I am seen the ones you mention in museums too. Have also seen a few in museums in Europe, even in small places like the Durham Light Infantry museum in a small town in England. They have a 1st model that was captured in Sicily in the summer of 1943. One of the first documented uses of the weapon.

I needed to look at an FG42 to make sure I had my translation of the German manual correct, so I went to a friend's house to look at his FG42 first model. I got him to take a picture of me with it while I was there. I don't have access to post the picture here, so I put it on my website: www.GermanManuals.com

                  Here's a link to the picture: http://www.germanmanuals.com/images/FG42-1.jpg

The FG42 is surprisingly short (37") and very light. The manual I've translated is 79 pages with lots of illustrations.

                      Replica FG 42's

Hello, the Japanese make high quality replica FG 42's in both "air soft" firing models and static display versions. The also make both early and late versions. Just go the the web and type in "FG42" and you will see dealers selling them. The problem would be possible import restrictions. They are not cheap and sell for about $1,200 to $2,000. I believe a replica second model with scope sold recently on eBay. Your chances of finding a real one would be virtually nil!

                        Matt,

You must have seen the FG-42 (2nd model) at the Champlin Fighter Museum a fair number of years ago. The gun actually belonged to the legendary machinegun dealer J. Curtis Earl and was on loan to the museum(along with many other MG's).

About 10 year ago the FG-42 was sold, and it now resides in a private collection here in Jackson, MS where I live. No, the gun is not mine but I have handled it. Next time I visit with the owner I'll get him to take my photo with the gun.

I also know of an early 1st model FG-42 located in a another private collection here in Mississippi. This gun has the early sheetmetal buttstock that is smooth, i.e. w/out the reinforcing ribs.

Interestingly, the owner of the 1st model FG-42 tells me that his theory/understanding is that the FG-42's were never intended for general issue but, rather, were to be issued out for only specific missions. In other words, it was not originally intended that an individual paratrooper would be issued his own FG-42 "for keeps" to haul around everywhere he went, but rather, the FG-42's were to be drawn only as needed for certain missions. According to this guy's theory, later in the war when it was clear that no more airborne missions would be flown, the FG-42's were pulled from stores and all permanently issued out. Anyone else ever heard of this theory?

Some time ago I corresponded with a guy (Ken Kelowitz (sp?)) who is a big time collector/researcher of FG-42's. If I remember correctly, Ken stated that he has identified about 150 surviving FG-42's of all types around the world. Of these, I think about 50-60 were in the U.S., some in public museums and some in private hands.

Take the tour of the FBI's headquarters in D.C. and you will get to walk thru their reference collection of weapons, where they have 2 or 3 2nd model FG-42's along with piles of MP-44, MP-40, etc.

Here's a nice photo of the replicas mentioned above. They look pretty convincing!
