Help with WW1 Mauser unit markings

    Hello All,

A friend owns two WW1 Mauser rifles, and would like to know more about the unit markings on the rifles, i.e. unit information to which the rifles belonged to- he points out these were not exports, but German rifles

1917 Erfurt KAR 98, marks located on top of butt plate

    9.H.
    1.35.

I am guessing at the 35, because a little worn.

On the 1915 Gew98 located on unit id disc on buttstock

    166.R.6.18.

    Your assistance is appreciated,

    Thanks!

The first marking signifies 9th Husaren Rgt (Husar regiment), 6 Eskadron (squadron) , 35 Waffe (weapon). Is this rifle perhaps a Kar98a with stacking hook and not a true Kar98 that is a really rare bird?

The second one signifies 166 th Grenadier Regiment, 6th Komagnie (company), 18th Waffe (weapon).

This fellow loves expensive collectibles, especially WW2 British rifles, but has since grown to German and American weapons as well, so it is very possible-

WHat else would distinguish a Husar rifle?

Joe, it is marked 1917 Erfurt therefore it has to be a kar98a as the original kar98 were made for only a short field test run in the early 1900s. Every long arm that have seen in the hands of WWI era Hussars have been the 98a.

Further info, it is marked KAR98 on the receiver and has a "forward stacking bar".

I'm using his description, I'm not familiar with WW1 era rifles.

Thanks for the informarion thus developed,

Allright, I was typing before lunch and getting hungry. I missed the 1917. Duh.
