    Relic mp40

    Hi

I got this mp40 in relic condition a couple days ago and I wonder should I clean and restore it or keep it as it is. My cleaning skills are not the best so I'm unsure of how and to what point it could be cleaned of the rust. No doubt the value of untouched relic is hard to measure in money. Definately wouldn't call such pieces "junk". It was stored under some building so it isn't too thin metal but the rust has done enough damage in the other hand.

The man who gave it to me had it from his uncle who had stored two of these (I wonder if it's true then what happened to other piece )
He had used one with his neighbour friend as young boys, at one point they disassambled the barrel and lock and this is what he has left.

I also got Panzerfaust30 tube last week and two months ago MG42 gehäuse and svt40 so I wonder how should I approach them. All from or around my hometown. Yes, I got seriously interested in arms only couple months ago so I haven't had a chance to drag any bigger guns to my home yet (I was offered a large portion of 45mm russian ATG for 100€ though, but it's kind of far from where I live ...)

    Regards

I would keep it "as is". It is nice to see it un messed with.

    Cheers, Ade.

Probably the best solution for now. Not that it would get any worse if I keep it well. I'll try to find a barrel and couple other pieces like magazine in matching condition to go with it.

I was also just visited by my more experienced collector friend who pointed out that this does not miss the lock
The shoulder stock is however strangely taken apart?! ... Stock arms can be removed this way?

      Regards

shoulder stock and barrel are indeed gone, shame, I would leave it as it is too.

          Hello!

If I were you I would keep it as it is. As you write the MP has it’s history: ”It was stored under some building”. Well, by looking at it one can clearly see it’s post-war history. If you start to restore it and remove rust you will remove it`s character in my opinion – just to “make it look better”.

It has rusted graciously and you can see what a beauty it once used to be, so keep it as it is

            Relic arms and ordnance

I decided since there are too many new items (or old if I get to make pics) to make a new topic for each of them so I just post in this thread. With their stories.

            SD4HL
            Splitterbombe Dickwandig 4Kg Hohlladung

I got this piece about a year ago from one latvian guy who called me on my newspaper ads. He told me he has some items that I should take a look on, he wanted nothing for them in return. That was nice of him. He gave me three photos of estonian soldiers in German army during WW2, couple ammo containers in decent condition and this deactivated bomb. What he refused to part with (no money, nothing could change his mind) was a very nice Waffen-SS EM buckle. Maybe I should try and see if he still has it ...

Anyways noone I asked knew what this bomb is until I identified it myself, today. It turned out to be SD4HL.

Very nice information on this site, about "BOMBS, DISPENSERS & DROP CONTAINERS":

            http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/LRG/sd4hl.htm

Isn't it more suitable for armor-piercing/anti-tank than anti-personel though?

If anyone expert with Luftwaffe or ordnance has anything to add in details or specify, I'm more than happy to listen!

              Relic MP40

I agree in leaving it as is. But would anyone else agree to apply something
to halt the rust progression...such as WD40? Not suggesting to remove any surface material...just halting it.

It looks like passive not active rusting to me... no?

                  Hallo

Leave it as it is, there are too much parts missing, folding stock, barrel,
bakelit, magazine. You would need to get this parts also in relic condition, and when you get them how to mount, because for mounting this parts you have to get the screws and pins moving, and thats a lot of fun ...

Better wait for the next MP40 where no parts are missing ...
