There are lots of different ways. You can use brake cleaner to do it fast or you can use a solvent like Hoppe's #9 and take you time with it.
Keep the brake cleaner off of the wood and don't forget to thoroughly clean out the gas system.
I think that they are would be a decent investment. They are the finest constructed SKS's I've ever handled.

My understanding, and perhaps someone can correct me if I'm wrong, is that the Yugo SKS's are heavier than most, because the Yugoslavians had difficulty obtaining a reliable supply of a trace element (maybe molybendium?) and so had to bulk them up a bit to compensate for weaker steel.
For this reason I have been more interested in one of the Russian ones were I to get one.

While the Yugoslav guns are functional, IMO they are not the best ones built. For me that honor goes to the original Russian guns (not the reworks, and not the very earliest which needed some engineering changes). And to a lesser extent the early Chinese which were built on Russian machinery. (Some of the earliest Chinese even had some Russian parts.) FP
