    MG42 Marking

    Hi Guys,

Does anyone know what the 'M.U.' that is sometimes stamped on the left side rear receiver of the MG42 above the serial number- back near the buttstock?

    Thanks.

    MG42 marking

I, too, would like to know what these extra two letters mean. In my case, my MG42 was stamped DFB with an extra FG stamped above. It would be too simplistic to interpret that as being Fallschirmjager Gewehr.

      MG42 letters

      Hi folks,

If I´m not mistaken, the MG42 used letters (two) instead of numbers to indicate the manufacture year!

A friend of mine has one "bnz" (Steyr) MG42 and he told me so, and even showed me the book where he discovered that his MG was made in 1944 - sorry, I don´t remember the what was the book.

I can check it for you (the book and the date) and post a message later, if both of you want.

What is the manufacturer of your MG?

      Douglas.

        MG42

My previous MG42 was stamped DFB (Gustloff-Suhl) with an additional FG above it in about the same size lettering.

Douglas is correct! The two letters directly above the model designation "MG 42" will indicate the year of manufacture. However, I'm afraid that I too, like Douglas, can't remember what years that the letters indicate!
          I once had an MG42 that was marked as follows;

          "GH"
          "MG 42"
          "2367 c"
          "cra"

The top line is the year. The second line is the model designation. the third line is the serial number. The forth line is the makers' code, which in this case "cra" is for "Maget, Berlin."

The makers for the MG42 are as follows:
          1. Grossfuss (can't remember Grossfuss letter code?)
          2. Mauser, Obendorf "byf" or "svw"
          3. Maget, Berlin "cra"
          4. Gustloffwerke "dfb"
          5. Steyr "bnz"

For some reason I thought there were more than just 5 makers, but I can't think of any others? Am I missing any?

            Hi Matt
The MU marking that you mention is a two digit code for 1944 as used by Mg 42 manufacturer Gustloff Werke , Suhl

              MG 42 Manufacturers

              Hi Again
Could not help but notice Grossfuss (bpr) being mentioned as a manufacturer of the MG 42 , they never did manufacture complete weapons but were a main sub contractor for making receivers that usualy ended up on pieces assembled by Maget

Do you know what year the "GH" stand for? on a MG42 produced by Maget?

If MU indicates 1944 production of a Gustloff-Suhl MG42, what date does FG represent?

                    Two digit year codes

                    Hi Matts
The marking FG on a Gustloff Weapon Is code for manufactured in 1943 And the figure GH on a Maget weapon is also code for 1943. It has only been a short time that these details have been known and good guns were dismissed as French post war re issue purely because the lack of a readable date
Hope this is of help to you
                    Regards your cousin
