I saw one 98/40 at the SOS in the line waiting to come in. The guy was asking 1k for it, which I thought was very fair for a matched example. It did have a re-finished stock, but many would not have caught this as it was fairly light handed work and well done...if the later can ever be said of a refinsh! I would have bought it at the door had the stock not have been sanded and refinished.
I saw the same rifle later in the day on a dealers table...I did not inquire as to his price.
I bought my 98/40 in 1972 or 73 for $55. Most German weapons collectors that I showed it during time frame did not even know what it was! They are considerably rarer and harder to find than a 98k. There were more sniper original Germman rifles at the SOS than there were 98/40s by a good margin..if that gives you some basis to compare!
