first buy a good k98 book
i know most folks want to buy the gun first but unless you are already real knowledgeable about k98s i would suggest buying a great book first. learn all the details of the gun such as where and what type of codes and numbers should be on them. decide about cupped butt plates verses flat early war verses late. learn how to spot the things that make certain k98s valuable and what is incorrect or wrong about others. You can buy a fair gun and then get the bug to make it correct and spend way more on it than its worth and eventually have more in it than had you bought a correct matching number gun to begin with, if you just want a shooter the shows have some great ones. i could have bought a nice mismatched k98 at the last show for 100 bucks. be sure to look at bore if you are going to shoot it. and be sure to buy fmj ammo if your going to shoot it. i had trouble with mine using short nose lead bullets. i wish i had stopped at a show sometime and asked a knowledgeable seller exactly what was his best k98 and why it was worth ten times the asking price of his cheaper models. those guys that specialize in a particular gun are very knowledgeable. i lucked out and got a good one by chance when i got mine but most folks are not so lucky
