    My First SMLE No4 Mark1*

    Hello

I have just obtained an SMLE No4 Mark 1* rifle. To comply with UK law the rifle is deactivated. This is the only weapon I have bought, having for many years wanted one the Lee Enfields. This particular rifle is, I believe one of the Savage, USA, manufactured rifles.

Here are some photos of it. Any comments or observations welcomed.

    Regards
    David

Nice - one of the first things that springs to mind when you think of the British soldier in WW2 is the 'tommy' helmet and the good old No.4...

Close in of the 'US Property' stamping, which I believe indicates this to have been made under licence by Savage in the US for the British & Commonwealth troops.

                        Finally, the rifle field stripped.

                          Hello

Thanks for the reply. I agree, nearly all depictions of a 'Tommy' shows him going into battle with the No 4 in hand, with bayonet fixed. The only other thing that may spring to mind is the Webley service revolver in the hand of the officer.

                          Regards

I have one EXACTLY like it here in New Mexico, that my father gave me years ago. He used to hunt with it when he was a boy. They are great shooters. I shoot mine from time to time, and they will easily "pop" milk jugs full of water, at 300 yards!

                              Hello

I have, some years back, shot with these Lee Enfields and found them to be very capable and accurate weapons. Sadly now, with the UK gun laws, although you can still buy ex army surplus ones of these for sports / target shooting, the hoops you have to jump through to get a Firearms Certificate in the first place makes it inpractical to most. I have to say that I am quite envious that you have one that you can use. Still, deactivated as it maybe, at least I've got a little piece of history.

                              Regards
