    remington rand 1911a1

i braved the snow storm, almost a foot on the ground, but my awd volvo v70r made it to and from the house that had my remington rand waiting for me! i was able to pick up a 98% remington rand 1911a1. i think the gun dates from 1943.it looks nice next to the ithaca i got last week. they have a union switch and signal waiting for me as soon as they find it! they have too many guns to look through, but theyknow it is there, an old time collector past away, and now their kids are parting out the collection. i just hope i can afford the union switch and signal when they find it. regards,, mike

              Michael,
This is a great RR. Yes, you are on the scent, and on the trail. Do not fail to nab the USS if you can get it. If you can't afford it, p/m me. Maybe I can!!!

I hope you get a chance to get a Collectors Guide before you spend a lot on a US&S. For them to be collectible and worth the money they usually bring they have to be completely original. Some early reference said some pistol production was accepted under the authority of FJA (Colonel Frank J. Atwood - Army Inspector of Ordnance, Rochester Ordnance District ) and that's hogwash. The serial range of US&S production is 1041405-1096404 and totalled 55,000 guns and every one of them was accepted under the authority of Lt. Col. Robert C. Downie, Army Inspector of Ordnance, Pittsburg Ordnance District.

-US&S pistols never had the ordnance wheel (belt) acceptance stamp
-The pistols are divided into three variations by collectors....the early guns with no P proof stamp on the slide or receiver....the second with the P proof on the slide in front of the rear sight, but over on the left side near the serrations and a P on the receiver.....and the third with a P proof in front of the rear sight, and on the receiver. There MUST NOT be any variation in those details.
-US&S guns have a very distinct blue trigger, they have blued small parts like the grip screws, grip safety, hammer. If these parts match the gun, it's refinished. Actually US&S pistols were Dulite blued, as were the small parts, but the exterior of the slide and frame were sandblasted which gives the pistol the very nice gray/blue look. The small parts were Dulite blued also, but not sandbasted.
-The feed ramp must be machined....not polished.
-US&S have very distinct MSH and it must be original.
-US&S hammers are distinct to only US&S production.
-US&S barrel bushings are distinct to US&S production.
-Check the RCD and make sure it's burnished or broken finish in the lettering and circle.
-HS is the only barrel supplier to US&S
Each of these components is critical to having an original US&S. If you spend big money on a gun without these features, you're wasting your money.

I'm a little concerned the finish does not match on your RR....it should on the slide and frame, even in the worn finish condition it should still be the same color tone......I would not pass judgement on internet photos but it has a mix match look in the photos provided and maybe it's the photos or my monitor settings, that's why it's not smart to pass judgement on photos......although it was easy to see your new Ithaca was just right. Good luck researching the US&S, I hope you find a dandy!
