    K98 Sling.

I just got this supposedly wartime K98 sling, alas I bought it unseen - fortunately it was cheap....next time I guess I should look before I jump...oh well time to send it back...

As soon as I opened the packet I saw the main part of the sling definately wasn't a WW2 German K98 sling and the keeper whilst I'm not 100% certain I'm pretty sure that is just an out and out fake?

Some pics - see what you think...

The length of the sling is just over 140cm, it only has two holes in the keeper end, no cross hatch markings on the leather and it don't have an extra leather loop/keeper as usually seen on K98 slings. It's got to be an Austrian StG58 sling I guess...definately not 3rd Reich anyhow.

    The keeper part...

I wasn't sure about this? Something didn't seem right about the shape and the loop seemed to be further up than it should be? Also I'm sure I've read that the ones with the full manufacturers name and date are early ones and would of had a brass stud, any with a steel stud would just have a makers code/date or WaA markings?

Anyhow, what do you think? Sling is definitely not correct but what about the keeper? Like I said I think it's not right...

I think its an MP40 one with the 2 holes and it looks like its been looped over the end of an MP40

I can see where your coming from with that but I think it's too long? Not sure how long an MP38/40 sling actually is but I'm guessing it wouldn't be this long?

AFAIK the Austrian StG 58 sling was very alike the K98 one but only had two holes (like mine) and was longer than the K98 (like mine) and had no cross hatching (like mine) so I'm still erring towards it being an Austrian one?

        Anyone else got any ideas?

Definitely not an MP40 one as the holes are in the wrong place and it's too long going by what I've seen while searching t'internet.

          K98 Sling

I HAVE SEVERAL K98 SLING'S AND THEY ARE 46-48 INCHES LONG (about 123 cent), 140 cent is about 55 inches and i have accidently gotten one of those from the web and sent it back. as far as your sling, i just compared it with one of mine and it looks real but not a k98. too much left over leather if it is 140 cent. the only thing I noticed was the ends where the leather is looped around the buckle, the metal tabs are ground flat on all my slings, where yours are still round, other than that it looks real enough, like used somewhat?
I would be only too happy to e mail you a scan of my best sling.

            Hi Geopop,

            Thanks for your reply.

After trawling around the internet and stuff I'm fairly certain that the main sling is Austrian StG58 as the length ties in with an Austrian sling and the fact that it only has two holes in it instead of three points also to Austrian (also popular for making into dodgy K98 slings it seems). The keeper - also going by stuff on the internet - is probably a proper K98 one but most likely post war (Norwegian?) and has had the wartime details stamped on it with the intention of making it seem to be something it's not...

Thanks for the offer of the scans but I'm okay without them - I have a good idea what a proper sling is - that's why it was a case of WTF when this one popped out of the packet...however I thought I'd better check just in case it was some obscure variant that I didn't know about.

Postwar MP sling, should have a stud.

The keeper is repro and repro marked. They made it black with some old motor oil or so..looks nasty.

I recognice the keeper...not the particulair stitching above,,Germans did that also,,but the stitchings are to thick.

If you like to see some cool origial slings..check the e-stand...have some for sale!!

                Best regards Tommy
