on my k98 ar41code on top of the barrell at the reciever its stamped 7.91. I bought a box of sellier and bellot8x57js.it says on the box only for barrells with s-caliber bore7.89mm,groove 8.20mm. aside from this not being top quality ammo what do you think about it being corredt size and all. i know about lands and grooves and smaller number is land diameter and larger number is groove diameter and i think i got the right stuff. just being sure. i only got two eyes and ten ingers and need em all Thanks pitts duncan

Never heard that S&B was not top quality ammo before. I know that they have had some recalls as have many or most other makers but as a brand it is considered first rate by most people that I know.
Yes, the caliber desigination that is cited on the box is correct for 8mm mauser, as are many other designations. You have to understand that there are perhaps 20 different designs of rifle cartridges that are known by the name "8mm" but are not safely or in many cases even phisically interchangable with each other. 99% of everything fired today in a Mauser rifle of 8mm caliber is 8mm Mauser rimless .323 cal. (S) type ammo. Even this one cartridge is know by several different names so you may need to learn them all.
I wouldn't git all wrapped up in the various tolerences found in the lands and groves of the 30 million or so 98 Mausers that have been made...as you will run youself to death for no reason.
