Hi Josh,
This is from my S/27 1937
As you can see, it is not a pretty sight.
I have not taken this one apart, but on another one i had the barrel had a 1/4inch slot cut nearly the whole length on the underside...
Outwardly they look fine, it is when you strip them down that the OMG/WTF factor kicks in.........

Look at it this way...if the guns over here were not deactivated then they probably would be destroyed...sure it ain't good to deactivate some of these rare guns but better that than destroyed totally - so look at it as you are saving some rare gun - or maybe even some not so rare one - from total destruction...so that should help ease your conscience?
Another good reason - for me anyhow - is that because they are deactivated then it enables me to own a couple of MG34's, an MP44, a K98, a P38 and an L2A3...if they were not deactivated the only one I would have the slightest hope of owning live would be the K98..but even then chances would be slim...the rest would all be Section 5 and us mere mortals would not have a snowball in hell's chance of owning them live.

I concur with you, Josh. It really adds nothing to the Forum to make negative comments, and I won't except IMO instead of being like clipping a bird's wings it's more like owning a world class catch dog and being forced by government decree to "cut" him. With due respect and feelings of pity for our English friends, it is very difficult for someone like me, decended from Carolina Backcountry Scott-Irish Presbyterians, to understand why anyone would allow the government this much power

If anyone thinks it's better in the US, you're half right, half wrong. Think about all the nice K98s, G43s, pistols, etc we can own, but then think about all the MP40s, MP44s, and MGs that had to be demilled so people like me could afford them.
How many nice, original firearms had to die to get into "the land of the free"? The number is probably as rediculous as the '86 ban itself.

I really cant see the big deal they are deact you dont have to go through crap to get a licence to own it live and get a safe to make sure its secure with a deact you go to a show hand your money over and its yours there is nothing different to live just the bolt is cut and the barrel is welded so no criminals can get hold of them and kill me or my family
Also find an mg here from a vet you can get a sect.5 dealer to pic it up and have it deactivated in the US it has to be BUTCHERD cut into 3 pieces!!! that is worse than Britan so Please stop moaning about British deacts and look at your own

Then I stand corrected. I know nothing about fully automatic weapons, and I think that's what you are talking about. Actually, my area of expertise,if I have any, is original and conventional flintlock Kentucky longrifles....the weapons that helped win our independence from a power that wanted to restrict our ownership of firearms. If you are comfortable with your station in life, then fine. I most definately would not want to influence you away from your acceptance of total government control of firearms. but as for me....never mind...Patrick Henry expressed it better than I can.
I monitor this website simply to pick up intelligence about K98k's. I desperately want to own one....one that is original and not messed with. One that I could pick up and fondly hold and feel, and never mind that it may have fired in anger at my Father or Uncles who spent a little time in the Home Country before hitting the Beaches of France.

I think the ban on section 5 stuff was probably not such a bad thing but the other [hand gun] ban was probably just a knee-jerk reaction to the public's outcry at the Dunblaine massacre and probably hasn't achieved anything in regard to gun safety etc.

This is how I see it:
Facts:
1. It is illegal for the normal UK citizen to own certain types of weapons.
2. These weapons do exist in the UK.
3. Not everyone's happy about the ban.
Now the question:
1. What do you want to do with these weapons? Deactivate them so that they can be collected and enjoyed, or cut them into pieces and dispose of them?
I understand that a lot of people think that a deactivated gun is no longer a gun. I guess that I have to agree. However, the collection of deactivated weapons is a joy in itself. The deacts are a piece of history, and as such are facinating in their own right. I don't need to be able to shoot them to be able to enjoy them
I'm obviously biased. I'd love to own a live weapon, and be able to take it out to shoot it (which is possible in the UK with weapons such as the K98 with a lot of bother), but I am also bound by the law of the country. Maybe better this way that to degrade the 'gun culture' that seems to have taken over certain other countries...
