    Mp44...

I've finally got around to taking some pics of my MP44.

MP44 marked, serial no. 751dd, dated '44. One mag marked MP44 and another StG44.

It too is unfortunately deactivated but being in the UK that's the only way we can have them. It's an old spec deact so will strip and dry fire.

Bolt and carrier are welded together, rod is still attached on mine though the end of it has been chopped off.

    Overall view

    Markings are 751 dd/44

The stock - this is mismatched and has the serial no. of 7487

There is a Mauser byf marking here and the serial no. 8859 (?) ad and this has been crosed out and replaced with 8895 underneath it.

The business end! This is a weird bit really because if you look closely you can see there is a sling swivel on this side too. I'm presuming it was fixed there at some point by a post war user - but it begs the question why? The original swivel etc is still there and I can't really see the point in the new swivel - if you are going to fit a sling then why not just use the original swivel? The but end is as it was originally no new sling fitting there so that end would of been used as it was intended? Anyone got any ideas? I've seen war time and post war pics of them in use and I've never seen a picture of a sling on the 'wrong' side...got me baffled?

That would explain the dark finish....Both MP's shown here were refurbished for postwar use.....Probably East German......Thanks for showing.....Nice pieces Gents..... Bodes

The left side sling swivel may serve some purpose, but it is pretty useless (not to say stupid) for actual combat use. The fixed left side operating handle would snag anything and everything if carried on the chest, back or side. It would also be rather painful if you need to hit the dirt quick when carried not at the ready. The placement of the original sling swivel on the MP43/44 and StG44 series and the fixed front sling retainer on the MP38/40 was a compromise, you couldn't carry it in an optimum way (if you're not a lefty that is) but at least it wouldn't snag your webbing or uniform. Post war left side operating handles, lessons learned, are with few exceptions of the folding kind and in the case of the G3 also well situated out of harms way.

Yup, definately been refinished post war but it has no reissue markings or anything on it...or not that I can see anyhow?

I really can't figure out what was going thru' their minds with that extra swivel tho'...seems a totally pointless exercise...oh well...I guess they must of known what they were doing....

The stock has got a shiny varnished/lacquered type finish which is also non original and which looks pretty crap - what would be the best way to get this off without buggering up the wood? There is what looks like a very faint eagle & swastika on the stock and I'm hoping that I could get the finish off without damaging it?

Wire wool and some sort of paint stripper?

                Markings...

I thought I'd put some pics of the other markings up - I was going to take some when I started the thread but forgot so here they are now.

I presume this is where the main maker mark goes along with the various waffenampts and proof mark - if so maker is bnz - Steyr-Daimler-Puch, also what I think is qlv. There are two waffenampt marks, WaA623 and Eagle/280 along with the Eagle and Swastika (proof mark?)

qlv and a big 'S' on the barrel

                Waffenampt Eagle/280

                WaA21

Serial No. 751 dd and the date 44

Correct me if I'm wrong but - first picture - is there something in the barrel?

And second picture - why the barrel is partially brown?

                  Regards
                  Jacek

You are correct - it's deactivated...the barrel is slotted and a rod welded in.

The brown colour? - no idea?
