    Soviet Mortar Rounds

Last weekend in the area of Hatvan (60 km east of Budapest) I found the following rounds.

Who can help me identify the caliber?

    Besten Dank!

    Erich

        Hello Erich,

Good to hear from you again! I see you made it back to Europe, excellent! The Mortars are most likely 82mm but without measurements I can't be 100% sure. What are the dimensions of the brass casing you show?

        Cheers
        Gary

          Hey Gary,

Yes, I am in Budapest! Finally after so many years.

The casing measure 3cm and 4.5cm respectively.

I am trying to piece togehter the battlefield where my grandfather died. First a lot of heavy schrapnel then a lot of mortar rounds and we also found rilfe cartridges. So this leads me to believe that there was an artillery prepartation, then mortars for the close assualt then close combat.

          See attached.

                Erich,

That is truly outstanding! I know how much it means for you to be there and if I can help in any way just call! So far I believe them to be 82mm rounds, the measurements you give are consistent with the 82mm tailfin assembly. The 3cm housing would be for the 60mm they used. Please keep the pictures coming of where you are digging as well!

Great information from you all! And the webpages help a lot.

Here is an 82mm round that my girlfriend's father found in their garden years ago.

Since it is unexploded, was it perhaps a 'dud'?

Wait a moment....from the site that Adrian listed, these look more like the German 81mm Wurfgranate 34 and the field is full of them....

                    Now I am more confused....
