    cleaning a soviet captured k98

I bought a soviet captured k98 last year. It has a weird sealant all over the gun. Like they sprayed a sealant on it. i have cleaned the gun inside, but how do I get this off of the stock etc... will it come off?

Its probably Shellac. Is the Waffenampts still on the stock?

Try dry cleaning solvent. It should remove the waxy junk without damaging the wood or metal. If you have access to compressed air to dry it with, that would help also. When I shot for the Army Pistol Team, we cleaned our weapons with it by dunking all the parts in a bin of it (wood grips and all) scrubbed, then a blow dry. Works fast too. Don't forget though that it is flammable. Hope this helps,
            Johnnie

                  Russian K98

The Russians coated the K98 stocks with Shellac, the best way to remove it is with denatured alcohol, available at Home Depot, Lowes, probably even Wal Mart. My rifle also has a sloppy black paint thrown over the original bluing, Mineral spirits and real light rubbing with 00 steel wool brought it off, I had real nice bluing underneath, that may not always be the case however.
