Not saying you're a bad person, but I think you should want him to get it back because it is his.
I see all too much of even grown men who harrass veterans for items. I meet many veterans, and it is to me more important for me to have a person to talk to like that instead of trying to pawn items off of them. If he gives it or offers fine, but don't ask, because it is an item he remembers while he fought. It's more special to him then it ever will be to us, I'd reckon.
Anyway, that's just my two cents. I'm not saying any of you are bloodthirsty collectors going to all extents to get militaria, but I think sometimes people talk/associate with veterans for the wrong reasons.

He had offered to give me the item but I had declined and finally got him to sell it instead of give it to me, I can never take anything from people for some reason, I never ask vets to sell there souvenirs to me unless they say that they plan on selling it or getting rid of it, but I just mention before that I am a collector/buff.

I took a trip one day into the Houston Police EOD shop- wow. Lots of WW2 grenades, cases full of examples they had discovered in mail shipments and such. If the airport screens incoming packages and they have anything that looks like that, the Police confiscate it. If inert, you MIGHT get it back. When I was there I saw cardboard tubes with brand new Panzershrek rounds in them...original...
