Vet pick up on P-38 Info Please!!

I have a chance to pick up a nice P-38 from a vets son.I have never delt with guns and dont want to get in over my head.He is asking 600.00 for it but does not have a holster and only the clip that is in it.All the #s match and is acceptance marked. Can any one please give me some insight on how much would be safe price for this and what going rate is on this type of pistol.
Thank you and have a good day.

    Well,
The condition is critical....if it is all matching and has not been refinished or anything like that then you're ok at $600. I would pass if the condition is poor.
Without any further information it is impossible to tell the value because some P.38's are worth lots of money depending on the variation.
It will have a manufacture code..."AC" or "CYQ" or "BYF" on the left side of the slide or it could have the "Walther" banner there.
So you can see that there are lots of different variations.
Just go on matching numbers, no import marks and above all condition and you should be alright.
    Good luck,

I would buy it. Ask the guys son if he knows how his father got it. Ask where he got it and the guns story. Walther banners are rare, so I definately would buy it.

Are you sure that it has the Walther banner?
If so and if the gun is an all matching pre-1945 pistol, then you hit the jackpot. But be sure about you arebuying, and try to get as much information as you can as Blue said.
          Good luck with your hunting.

A Walther banner for $600 would certainly be something. Keep us apprised of the situation and post some photos and serial number.

The serial #s are 011483 and the # under the waffen stamp is 359.
It is the banner (walther) P-38 it has black grips and is still very good untouched shape. He is sending his fathers name unit and where it was taken. He said he has no kids that need this pistol so he wanted someone to have it that would appreciate it.OK now guys what is this pistol worth.Maybe I finally found my once in a lifetime score????Dam Im excited love this stuff!!!
Thanks all for info you have provided.I will post pics next week when I get it.

It just so happens that I have a really nice SA dagger for trade.....

Your P.38 is a third variation "0" series. The 0 series were the first of the military procurement P.38's. They have the early style grips that are checkered (black) and have the classic high polish Walther finish on them.
Their finish looks like that of the PP's and PPk's and they are fairly scarce pistols.
You've done well at $600 considering that a really nice 0 series $2000+. A matching mag increases value.
                Congratualtions,
                R.Blue

SA daggers are nice but a SS chained dagger could be a possability.

I would add: that if this gun is a third variation zero series it is much more rare than a chained SS. Chances of finding this type of P38 is very rare. You can buy chained SS daggers all day but spend much longer looking for a zero series.

I wouldnt get rid of that pistol if I got a hold of it, keep it and treasure it. Dont give it away for some dagger unless it was an unground SS Rohm. This is a rare opporitunity and I would not let it pass.

Thanks again to everyone that has helped or comented on this P-38.I just got it home and took some pics. When I picked it up it gave me tingles.I have been collecting for a long time and not many items can do that.Let me know what your honest opinion on this is.Again the #s are 011483 and the waffen stamp # is 359 There are lots of markings almost on every piece. The clip is also stamped. It is in very good shape. The only spot I see is by the Walther Banner. The finish is also very nice.I am not an expert in any way on guns so this is just my opinion but on a scale from 1-10 I would say its a solid 8.Thanks and have a good day.
