All I shoot through my K98s is 1939 dated German silver tip, heavy ball ammo! Nothing else will do!
I do have some of that 1951 Turkish ammo as well, and it is cheap and easy to find. Just look at- www.midwayusa.com. They have some there. It does shoot really good, and is fairly clean (for corrosive ammo anyway.), just be sure to give the gun a good cleaning immediately after use!

thought I'd jump in on this thread and keep it going a little...
nothing beats a really sweet pre-war or early war 98k for looks.
I've owned several 98k's over the years, but my all matching S/42 1938 is still my favorite. really pretty gun. nice early war guns are real tough to find. I also currently own an excellent matching but for the bolt Dot 1944 which I recently picked up at an Estate auction. I use it to reenact with.
I would like to find a nice Byf43 possibly a Zf41 someday, and also either an Ax40 or 41 or a BSW gun.
I owned several Russian Capture guns including a Luftwaffe proofed S/27 1938, and the most interesting was a Bnz 43 single rune which had been reworked into 7.62 Nato by the Israelis post war. it had the star of David next to the rune! kinda sorry it got away from me. anyone got some pictures they could post of their 98k's? here is one of mine S/42 1938) with my Byf 43 P-38:

p.s. I do use Turk or Yugo ammo in my shooter grade 98k's because it is cheap. just remember to clean it with ammonia and water or a similar alkali soon after shooting or the corrosive mercuric salts from the Berdan primers will eat up your bore.
I shoot 1940 dated wartime German ammo in the good rifles. Matt, I'll trade you a box of 1940 ammo for a box of 1939...

Mausers
Hey guys,
I have a few, 1938 "27" Luft marked , all matching. A 1939 "27" Heer marked , incomplete, a 98/40, Hungarian, missmatch, a svwMB,45? French, all matching, a 98 kriegs model Chech rework , an old import as I can find no import markings, I'm thinking about making this one into a sniper, a G-41 , incomplete that I need parts for. Anyone got any? Got others but japs, etc...

1939 dated ammo!
Brian,
Sure thing! I got tons of these! I got an entire original WWII German sealed tin of ammo about 6 years ago. When I opened it up (yes it took quite a while to get the rust off the tin!) The original manufactures' packing slip was still on top, and all the ammo is great! Silver tip, German heavy ball. They are all marked "Z" over "Y" and the date "19" "39". The boxes aren't marked at all, and are basically really plain. This stuff is corrosive or couse, and packs quite a good kick, but it is the most accurate 7.92 that I have found!!
I wouldn't mind trading a box for a box of 1940 stuff though! PM me, and send me your email address or mailing address, and I'll ship a box out to you!

My 98K's
I collect snipers. The Mausers I have are a ZF41, Short side Rail, Single Claw, Low Turret, Hight Turret, Swept Back, and a Swedish 41B.
If anyone is interested I'll post photos for them.Last edited by tankdriver; 09-26-2002, 02:47 PM.
