    Walther PPk "PDM" Super RARE

I've been gone and a few days. It's good to be back.

Here are a few photos I found on my computer that I thought that you might find interesting. It is one that you will not see every day.

It is a Walther PPk procured by the Munich Police Department ( Polizei Direktion Munchen). These were manufactured in the mid 1930's, 1936-1937. It is estimated that 450 were procured.

There are Walther PP's marked "PDM" but they are more common.

One of the interesting things about this pistol is the way that it is manufactured. It is a bottom magazine release pistol. Almost all PPk's are push button magazine release. There were some made in 9mmk that were bottom magazine release.
Also, this pistol's frame is made of Duraluminum. The slide is steel. If you will notice it is a darkish blue color. Quite often this has faded over the years and turned a copperish/ gold color. Copper is one of the alloys in Duraluminum. This pistol's frame is in near mint condition and has not started to turn yet.

Duraluminum was developed in Germany. It was popular in the aircraft industry and the manufacture of Zeppelin's. It was thought that it would be a desirable feature in the handgun industry because it reduced the weight of the pistol. Companies like Walther and Sauer both used Duraluminum or "Dural" frames but sales were low.

I have included some photos of the "correct" magazine as well. If you will notice, there is not a cut out in the magazine tube for the push button release. These are very rare magazines.

In this photo the slide appears to be discolored. This not the case. The slide is near mint. The discoloration is from oil on the slide.
Walther's are hard to photograph becuase of their high polish finish.

Again, the slide appears green. It is most likely the reflection of the sky causing the discoloration.

The paperwork was found in the bottom of the holster.

                        R. Blue,

Very rare PPK indeed! Actually, the bottom mag release is found on all PDM PPks though, as is the Dural frame too. It is a characteristic of the PDM PPk.

Also, the last 3 digets of the serial number will be inscribed inside the slide opposite of the ejection port, just like the RZM PPk models are!

This is a super looking bringback though. Doesn't look like it was ever used (as there is not even the normal "trigger wear" on it!)

The reason why the slide looks different color than the frame is because the frame is Dural, and it has been anodized, where as the slide is steel, and has been blued. Nothing to do with oil on the frame.

I love it Thanks for sharing it!

Indeed a real rare bird. With capture papers an holster named . Just awsome. Thanks for sharing it.

                            Matt,
                            Thanks for the comments.
Yes, all PDM PPk's as well as PP's are "BMR", with the PPk's being Dural.

Yes this one is all matching. PPk's that do not have an external serial number on the slide are numbered inside the slide opposite the ejection port.

But the slide's discoloration is a trick of the light. The overall finish is quite even. The frame is slightly darker and in the right light a deep blue but the slide is about the same color.
I'll post a sister to this pistol at a later time, much rarer and much more interesting....
