    8mm ammo

    I am a re-enactor,I have a question. Could someone please describe and/or post some pictures of the proper war-time 8 mm ammunition the germans would have used to run through the MG-34 and 42 please? I have been seeing several different colored bullets lately,some bronzeish,some bright copper,some a pewter/silver. My question is simply which one should I use for a static display with an MG-42? Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Wannabe;

    They all are correct !!!
    The germans fielded 8mm ammo. that had cases made from steel, copper
    and brass. The steel cases sometimes had a copper wash, some had a greenish laquered finish to inhibit rust. The copper cases were just that-
    Copper. The projectiles themselves were either silver colored or copper colored.
    Finding some WWII headstamped, fired cases should not prove
    difficult; then you can buy some very inexpensive modern 8mm rounds and take the projectile out, to then 'mount' in your WWII cases (less the powder. of course ). This can be done by drilling a hole on a 2 X 4 piece of wood just large enough for the projectile to fit. Then just lever the case
    back and forth until the case bends enough to release the projectile !!
    WWII ammo. is VERY corrosive though. It will rust your barrel on the way home from the range !!!

      I happen to own 1500 rounds of 8mm NEVER opened Tragesleufes(spelling). The dates on my boxes are mostly 1939. The 300 round battle packs still have the paper stamp seal on them. This ammo is Nazi manufacture P-69 stamped. They are really clean. I would be willing to part with a 300 round battle pack, but shipping would be steep. Mike

      BTW: My friend and I broke down one of his cartridges and these rounds were stored very well through the years, no nitrite leaching, the insides of the brass are still polished. This stuff looks like it was made yesterday!
