I recently received my SA MG34 and really love it to death. Before I bought it I was told that it was a very difficult, finicky, high maintenance gun so I was fully aware what I was getting myself into. Well....my gun is very finicky right now and I am having some trouble with it. It could mostly be that I am very new to this MG and just don't know what to do and I would like some pointers from others that own this gun on how to get it running right and also keep running. First off the gun is having trouble feeding from the belt. The round will strip off the belt but will stove pipe when loading into the chamber. It looks like the bolt gets ahead of the round at one point and jams it up. The belts are new so I don't know if the belts are too tight or whatnot. If anyone has any pointers or help I am all ears!

Matt,
I have seen your problem before. Here are some things I have done to make '34's work; 1. Make sure you start with a clean gun, sounds basic but a must. 2. "lightly" lube your gun, the '34 is not one to be to heavy with oil. 3. Double feeding and stove piping is normally due to a bad extractor or ejector ( both easy to buy new and unissued ). 4. Take your bolts and try them with each barrell ( some will not work with each other, headspace! ).
5. Fire with a drum, it works better than a free hanging belt ( gravity!).
Normally this will get it going, if not send me "pm" with your email and I will send you pic's etc. of worn parts and new parts ( easy to see the wear ). If you need new parts I can help you.

robert

Robert, you are the man! Well I got to try it out again during my lunch break with better success in one area...but not another. I pretty much gave a belt a bath in silicon spray oil. I made sure that everything was snapped down securely and it was chambering rounds off the belt...finally. I did change ammo (I was shooting at an indoor range today) and was using some Yugo FMJ lead core. It stripped fine, BUT wouldn't cycle the bolt enough to eject the round. I am using some light grease on the bolt and barrel mating surfaces. Could it be my ammo? What is some good surplus ammo and what should I avoid? Thanks for the feedback and please keep it coming!

Matt,
Are your belts post war? If your bolt is not being sent far enough back that could be lack of gas so... is the "duse" installed ( It has happened ).
What grain ammo are you shooting? You want 196 grain loads or so and yes FMJ.
Look at the rollers on you bolts and the guides they twist on outside of the chamber, they should be smooth and without "burs".
Measure your recoil spring next time you clean and let me know the length!
The Yugo ammo should be ok, so is the German, Port., Stay away from the Turk 8mm it might be good in rifles but it has destroyed a couple of mg34's ( refer to "www.mg34.com" ) they give some info on this and also troubleshooting! I also think the South American ammo need not be used.
Keep me posted and I will continue to help, I also have gauges for this gun if we get to that point.
Regards,
Robert

Thanks for the support, you guys are great and I really appreciate the feedback. My belts are wartime but in brand new condition. I did use a different kind of lithium grease on the gun and (thankfully) she ran like a champ! I also oiled the belts with silicon oil which is very light and doesn't build up over time. I love Breakfree, but I don't like to use a penetrating oil on a gun as a lubricant as it can penetrate the primers and cause misfires. I gave the gun a very good inspection and the parts are very smooth (no burrs) and in great shape. Hopefully my luck will hold out and the gun will continue to purr. Again thanks and if you have any more input/advice please let me know.
