I'm just a dumb Irish lad but I think if I had the (or one of the) good doctor's sidearms with any kind of provenance, I would be putting it up at Christie's and not at the present venue. It's one thing to buy a Mauser/Luger or a Thompson sub gun there but this alleged piece of history doesn't belong on Gun Brokers or does anyone think D.D. would put Himmler's summer uniform on EBay or EPier?

None of the "mainstream" auction houses such as Southebys or Christies will handle 3rd Reich regalia as a matter of policy and a cavein to political correctness! Only speciality auction venues such as Greg Martin in Caifornia would handle a documented item such as this if it is in fact legit.

Originally posted by TMurrayJeez, I dunno, sounds kinda pricey. Still, would go well with my recent eBay purchases of Hitler's left testicle, Goerings innocence and Hess's amensia
If your travels for these gems lead you to stumble upon Eva Braun's Diaphram let me know - I know a buddy whom would mortgage his soul for that relic.

sszza2,
I want to be clear about Rankin's reference books. Like Law's and every book ever written there are mistakes.
However, we, as collectors owe a debt of gratitude to the fellows like Rankin who contribute to this hobby. There is no question that they make a bit of money on the books they write but they are by no means NYT best sellers and for the most part they are a labor of love.
I, for my own part, am reluctant to criticize too heavily because I simply haven't gotten off my lazy ass and written one of my own.
Rankins books are dated and there has been a great deal more information collected and published by fellows like Marschall, Pearson etc. since Rankin's books came out.
I just think that it is silly to say that "it's in Rankin's book and it's ok."
Hell, this Mod. 8 may be legit and correct as the day is long but I think that Pheonixpwb nailed it in his assessment. To have something as significant as this for sale in such a screwy venue is foolish. So much so that one can only surmise that there is something less than kosher about it.
