    Questions about my first K98

    Friends,

I have just bought my first deact K98. It is dated 1940 and was a Russian capture.

I am very pleased with it but I have a couple of questions:

    1) Above the date is the number 42 does this mean it was made by Mauser?

    2) It doesn't have a foresight cover, although on each side of the foresight it has a horizontal ridge. Are these for a foresight cover?

Some photos to illustrate and thanks in advance for any help.

    Cheers

    Ian

        Mauser

The 98k is Mauser mfg. in 1940 and the front site base is cut for a sight hood..Very nice..BILL

Where would it be possible to find a K98? I wanted one (it may be out of my price range, but I still want to see).

Just google it, it isn't that hard to find. Here's an auction site with them.

                  http://www.auctionarms.com/search/auctions.aspx?ab=301

I'm not going to give you my site that has original ones, because those are in limited stock. Look around on here. It's a great site. You can find garands, SVT-40, enfields, kars, nagants, everything.

                      More Questions....

                      Friends,

I have a couple more questions with my k98....

                      1) I have noticed, that on the rear sight, the ranges are marked on the underside as well as the topside. What would be the purpose of this?

                      2) As it's been deactivated to UK standards, Will I be able to load ammunition into it? If so, once loaded, how would I unload it?

                      Thanks in advance.

                      Ian

The sight was marked on the underside so that a soldier lying in a prone position could use it. I believe this was eliminated in 43' or so.

I have no idea about question # 2.
