i have the oppertunity to buy an ac45 "c" in about 90plus % condition w/ an unmarked laaate war holster and 2 mags for 400.00. what do ya'll think? it's got all late parts like the cog style hammer and stamped slide stop. also, what's the deal with the 1945 "zero" p38's? i was looking at one today: all very late parts, no markings on the port side of the slide except "p38", no WAa's in the usual places and the S/N on the starboard side of the frame starting w/ 026xxx.

If you are talking about a late war "zero" series gun, then it has to be a Spreewerke. This is because by December 1944, Spreewerke made it through the alpha numeric code system that they were using. Since they didn't date thier pistols, they had to use something else to serialize them. They started in Jan. 1945 with serial numbers with a "zero" prefix. In Feb. 1945 they used an "a" prefix. In March they used a "b" prefix. After that the factory was overrun and no "c" prefix exists!
Now as for specifics on the gun. The gun should be marked "cvq" (although it is possible that the slide was marked "cyq" in December!). It should have very rough machine markings, and either thin blued, and/or parkerized parts. It should have the "eagle 88" proofs on it. Magazines can be "eagle 88", "eagle WaA 706" and/or "jvd" marked. The locking block can be "eagle 88" proofed or "fnh" marked.
These late war Spreewerke P38 are rare, and they do fetch a premium price tag. Usually, depending on condition of course, they are usually at least double of what you would pay for say a standard "cyq".
I used to have one of the "a" prefix "cvq" marked P38s, but I sold it about 2 years ago for $850. That was 2 years ago. The price of this piece now would probably be close to $1,000!

thanks matt. i picked up the ac45 this afternoon. kool! its finish is, actually, not bad. i'm pretty happy, and my brother is already hounding me for it! as for the "zero" p38. well my p38 collector friend has it and it is a WAa359. but like i said above the markings are waaay different. i'll look at it again and repost. i have rather rudimentary computer equipment so i have no way to post a pic of the new p38, but if i can later i will. i wish there was some way to identify the holster, but w/ no markings i don't see how........
