I recently purchased a P 38. It has all the correct proof marks and all the numbers match. It is a BYF 44, serial number 8662 on the slide, barrel, and clip but on the frame it has 8662F (in block font). I thought when the letters followed the number they were always in script(or cursive)font. Also I thought the letter was supposed to follow all the numbers, not just the one on the frame. Have I always been wrong at this idea? Have I purchased a 'parts' gun?

Hi tharris,
Your P.38 was made by Mauser and they never serial numbered the magazines, only Walther did that through early 1942. The style of the suffix letter can vary but you should always have the suffix letter on the slide and barrel.
Pictures would help but, since the numbers match, it sounds like you might have a post war rework.
Regards, Leon
