    K98 bandspring question

Hi all. I have a K98 bandspring that has a small letter r on it where the waffenamt should go, and this is the only mark I can find on it. Does this denote that it is a replacement?, or is the mark of a reject? Just curious, thanks for any help.
    Regards,
    Mike

There are several subcontractors who used single alpha letters as their designation for mfg. For example, 'a', 'e', 'q', 'i' etc were used. If I were a betting man, I'd think it's a sub's code.

Thanks Bob. So, do think this would was probable replaced at some point in its history?, rather then coming from the factory like this. Thanks again, Bob.
      Regards,
      Mike

Well, early springs (like through '40) were numbered to the gun. Mid and late-war they lack SN'ing. IF, this indeed is a sub piece and is on a later gun, it could be orig.
