Any SVT40 fans here? Looking for basic hints.

I am close to buying a 1941 or 1942 SVT40. I have a selection of 5 equal condition (good condition) rifles. Seemingly original, but not what I would call matching numbers (forced match?).

Can someone explain to me approximately when they changed from the early type muzzle breaks (many ribs) to the later type (two big quadrant holes)?

Can it really be that these rifles had the serial electro penciled (or similar method) onto the bolt handle? To me it looks like a forced match?

I saw a few SVT40 bayonets for sale at 250 USD each!!!!? Is that really the going price range for a SVT40 bayonet!??

Most of these rifles were reworked at Russian aresenals where they were force matched as you say (electro pencil serial numbers). There are original matching examples out there (all matching serial numbers with no electropencil) but they are rare and a little more pricey. I have an original matching 1942 SVT40 in my collection with no electropencil anywhere on the bolt, handle or anywhere else.

I really like them. I want to find a matching SVT38 to compliment it but those are REALLY rare...I have only seen one for sale and it was a parts gun.

I believe the switch was made in '42 to the large holes muzzle brake. This was probably done with the desire to make the full-auto AVT ( which never really panned out). I own a number of these rifles and have always preferred the earlier ones although the bores are usually in poor condition on the earlier dated guns. The bayonets have always been hard to find and the going rate on the arsenal redone ones does seem to be in the $250.00 range you quoted. Also, original specimens that were not arsenal reblued never had the pencil etched numbers. best wishes,

Thanks to both of you for your help.

I wonder what the price level is for a spare magazine now that I heard the price for a bayonet. Can you tell me what they usually cost? Are there reproduction magazines in circulation?

Are there any typical weaknesses on the SVT40 that I need to look for before buying??

Also does anyone know what was the typical ammo type used? I got some 180grains S&B, will that do nicely or did the semi autos use different projectile weights than Mosin Nagants?

Original mags are around, but again not cheap. Repros are available.

          Cheers, Ade.

Where can I get a repro magazine? Also do you know if they work well or do they have feed problems?
