    Help with 98K front site.

I have a question about my 98k Rifle. I believe it's Russian Capture so it's missing the front sight hood. My question is can this be replaced with an original in that is it ready to accept the hood or is there any gun smith work that would need to be done.

Or maybe a better question is were all 98k rifles issued with hooded front site or were some without the hood?

William, I believe it was around 1941-42 when they introduced the front sight protector.....IF your rifle is earlier, it may indeed not have provisions for one (unless rebarreled later and sight upgraded)......IF provisions are there (it's cut for one), than all you need is a pair of snapring pliers or needle nose to pry the protector into the groove in the sight base.....It's easy.....Bodes

Oh great news thanks! I thought the hoods were standard and that the Russian removed them so that I would need to restore it to the rifle. Mine was made in 1938 so there is no groove for the sight hood and knowing it never had one I feel no need to restore it now.

        An utter tramp.

I put one on mine - a Russian capture from Ryton Arms , it was an utter tramp of a job to do , simple but a alward cuss.
Got it done after a small frustrating struggle.

I won't argue that they can test a person's patience IF one tends to be overly concerned with scuffing the sight hood or front sight ramp......However, after having the 'lil bugger fly across the room a few times, one can generally maneuver it into place.....Bodes

They began installing sight hoods already in december 1939 according to Backbone of the Wehrmacht.
