    K98 Barrel Number

Can someone explain what the number is on the barrel of my K98? It looks too high of a number for a serial number??? Is it supposed to match the serial number on the receiver which is a 4 digit number? Thanks!

Hi John the first symbol I have never been able to get a sure answer about but a friend sent me a copy of the german alphabet and it sure looks like the German S which I would guess is fo Sauer. The rest starting with the D is suppose to stand for the steel manufacture, lot number of the steel, etc. If I get time I will look it up for you, the information about barrel numbers is in Backbone of The Wehrmacht by Richard Law.Right now I have to run hope this helps some.

Thanks! So it has no relation to whether the rifle is "all matching" number-wise?

No relation at all to the serial number of the rifle.Early Sauers had the serial number on the barrel and receiver.Later it was either on the barrel or on the receiver or sometimes both.I dont know what year they started jumping around but I have a matching CE 42 that only has the serial number on the receiver.

My early Sauer has both the serial number of the rifle, as well as the barrel markings for lot number and year of manufacture.
