Thanks to one and all for your replies. Sounds as if the value is pretty much in the serviceability of the individual components (less receiver). I will see if I can find someone to check it out. What do I look for in an original stock? The only marking I can find is a faint “R” (and possibly something else?) on one side near the butt-stock. The stock has a dark stain/varnish finish.

Hi Lee,

Go to one of the inumerable Garand web sites and they will key you in with good pictures on what to look for.
