Pre-1946 Walther PPK Serial #'s

I have a general question regarding serial numbers for the Walther PPK's. Should the slide have a matching stamped serial number as the frame does? I have several that are and several that are not. The ones that are stamped are a late model production and then I have one that is mid stream. I also have a very early one that is not. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
