Eagle L marked 'X' range Luger

Hi all, i am new to this firearm thing, so i have to seek opinions from you experts here.

I am offered with this Luger. The dealer said this is very rare and throw at me so much jargons that i cannot understand. Here is a discription I asked him to send to my email so i can ask you guys for opinions.

"a 1939 model part of the procurement made under the orders of Heinrich Himmler to modernize and equip the Police [SD and Gestapo] by a central procurement agency. The guns ordered were from a specific range of known and recorded serial numbers, this gun was in the 'X' range [between numbers 258x to 767x] of the 1939 order, and it's number is 425x, the guns official acceptance mark was 'Eagle L' which this gun also clearly has. This Luger also has scarcely seen Police Unit markings on the front grip strap. These pistols from that order are eagerly sought and recognized as the best to own. They are also so well highly valued as to be much faked in America, but they lack the correct serial range and the 'Eagle L' mark that must be present to be original. These specific pistols were ordered [according to Speer] in 1945 to be transferred to the use of the Army, so, many were lost forever in Russia. This is one of the very few remaining that escaped the of fate being lost. Furthermore it saw later service in the German Police after the War. The numbers are all matching [except magazine] and the condition is most reasonable considering it's long and good service."

He is making an offer of US$2450, do you think it is reasonable.
There is another P38 model he is offering, which i can post up here later.

                elkcollector,

The dealer has made up a completely untrue story to try to sell you this P.08. It is an East German rework that was done around 1953, not 1945. The pistol was a 1939 police pistol during the war as evidenced by the cancelled Eagle/L on the right side of the frame. The markings on the left side of the frame are East German, as are the ones on the gripstrap. Run, do not walk, away from this luger that has nothing at all to do with the SD or Gestapo. How much does the dealer want to sell you this "very rare" pistol?

                    Elkcollector

The two previous posts are correct, the dealer is lying to you in an attempt to justify the price. This is a rip off.

You were fortunate to have asked your question and posted the Luger pictures on this forum, it saved you from making a big mistake.

Best of luck in your future collecting efforts.
                    Joe

I must agree with the previous posts. The story is a total fabrication, as far as i am aware, no Lugers were ever designated to the SS or Gestapo....

This Luger is also in pretty poor shape, vopo grips, post war stamps, missing sear safety, some rust and pitting and loads of dings and scratches.

                      Leave it alone.
                      Steve.

                        Brit Proofs Too

And, Oh Yes, not to mention what appears to be British Proofs on top of the bolt at the toggle joint, and just to the right of the serial number on the right receiver. I wonder how those are explained?
Actually, there might be some value (negligible) to the variety of marks on this poor old thing. Reminds me of a blank wall in the barrio. Every gang marks their territory. Over and over and over.
And Steve is correct. That thing is rougher than a stucco bathtub!!

Hi Ronnie, they are British Proof House de-activation marks. This Luger is truly one to miss.

                          Cheers, Ade.

                            Thanks Ade!!

Thanks for the input on the deact marks, Ade. I'd often wondered what they look like, and where placed. Subject for another topic for the education of us upstart colonials sometime in the near future, I hope.
Fortunately, not something we have to concern ourselves about here in West Texas. But interesting to know how the weapons are marked. Would appreciate any education you guys will allow us.

                              De-act marks

Hi Ronnie, I wish we did not have to have them

Enjoy shooting your Lugers. I am not jealous, really I am not.....

                              Cheers, Ade.
