Rules on posting deactivated firearms and accessories from Canada?

Hi Guys, I have a friend in Canada, who has got a collection of firearms and accessories (all deactivated) that he is planning on selling through the internet. Problem is that he has no idea on what the deal is on shipping these around the world and neither do I for that matter...could anyone tell me what countries he would be allowed to ship them to and what countries he would not be allowed to ship them to and what does he have to look out for in terms or paperwork, customs and regulations? And any other hints and tips that you could give would really be most appreciated.... thank you very much in advance for your help. Cheers, Torsten.

English deactivation. In practical terms I believe this generally involves filling the barrel with a plug of molten metal which is allowed to harden in place.

I believe but am not sure that most EU member countries have laws similar to UK laws.

In the US deactivated weapons have to have the reciever cut into three pieces with a blowtorch. You can't use a metal saw, as it is possible to weld the reciever back together.

      Regards Craig.

thanks for your replies so far... so, where he can send them to, would depend on how they have been deactivated and what has been done to them? I have searched the net but cannot find anything.... would anyone have a list or something like that on what the regulations for the various countries around the world are for shipping de-activated weapons? Chers, Torsten.

Forget about Poland - the rules are so unclear that sometimes even deact's are treated as live ones.

Try asking about Germany and Czech - their regulations are much more liberal

            Dear Torsten,

You can never ship to the UK because these guns would be treated as live until they have been approved by the proof house.

All guns that are de-actvated in Germany/Austria you must have 6 holes drilled in the barrel that are the same size as the calibre of the weapon, the actual chamber must also be filled with weld. Bolt must cut at 45 degrees and firing pin hole also filled with weld.

In theory you should be OK to ship to Germany/Austria provided the above criteria are met.

But whatever you do don't ship it to the UK.

            Regards Craig.

Hi Craig, thank you for your explanations.... so, it basically looks like him wanting to sell them internationally is a big no-no... Cheers, Torsten.

Your friend will find plenty of customers who can legally have these items in Canada - no need to fool with international shipments. To do anything else is flirting with disaster. No amount of money is worth the potential problems!

that is the conclusion that I have come to, too... and that is what I will tell him...he is already selling them at shows and stuff in Canada, but he was hoping to sell them faster internationally....ah well, can't be helped then... Cheers, Torsten.

the problem with the early Canadian dewats is that they probably did the least to deactivate them.Sometimes, all that was done was to weld any take down mechanisms, and plug the barrle. They do not do that anymore and are much more strict!

I am in Canada, and buy these types of dewats.perhaps i can be of some assistance?

I agree with kurskss, I have sold many German dewats in Canada with NO problem at all. I have yet to find a country other than Canada to sell them in. Hopefully will be putting up an Mp40 before the end of the week, coincidentally. There is plenty of interest here. Good luck,
                      Joe
