The bands look fine and consistant to me. In my experience the bluing was more durable on these earlier 98ks. I've seen a number of them with little finish remaining its true, but generally they look closer to your's with wear or plum brown to the edges and nice blue left in between.

Judging the wear and repair to the stock this one saw a lot of use and still the metal held up well. I think that the solid walnut stocks with flat buttplates tended to show a lot of wear and tear to the toe area and in the pre-war and early war period they authorized this repair technique to keep them looking good.

Thanks for the comment, I think most pre-war rifles especially this period had a lot more time spent on the finishing, and it has indeed survived quite a lot of hard use in pretty good condition. Interesting comment re the repair, what superb craftsmanship.

I agree with Phild.....The bands in your last photo look fine.....In the first full-length shot, it just appear to me they weren't evenly worn.....My faux pas......Nice rifle.......Bodes
