Thanks for getting me an MP28 and an MP41, but I'll have to pass on them.

I hate to burst your bubble, but a Zero Series P38 should not be dated!? and even if it was dated it would not be 1941, since these were only produced until April 1940.

If your P38 is dated 1941, then it should be an "AC41".
If you have a serial number between 1-4550b then it should have hi-polished finish and the "AC" marked on the trigger guard.
If you have a serial number between 4550b-4800i then it should not have the "AC" marked on the trigger guard, but will still have the hi-polish finish.
A serial number after 4800i, will have a matte military finish.

I've been looking at getting one of these! What would you recommend? I was looking for a long side rail, high turret mount, or single claw sniper? what do you suggest?

Also, can you give me any pointers on what to look for? I know there are a ton of fake snipers out there, and have seen several, but do you know an tips for spotting the fakes? If so, please inform me! Thanks!

Fakes are easy to spot. Probably the safest for the novice collector is the Long Side Rail rifle, impossible to fake because it uses a special reciever which would be against federal law to make. I have quite a few K98 snipers and would be happy to send you some pics.

Sniper Rifles

I collect WW2 sniper rifles. Currently have 2 LSRs, 1 High Turret, 1 ZF41, USMC M41/Unertl, 2 1903A4's, 1 No4Mk1T, 1 Type97, 1 91/30, also have quite a few other WW2 arms.

I used to collect all German WWII firearms, then I shifted to just German snipers...and added some Brit, US and Russian stuff. Got away from snipers about 5 years ago, but still have some choice rifles and accessories. I agree that the LSRs, HTs and single claw rifles are easy to spot, as far as fakes go. All choice ones of these are easily in the $10,000 plus range. REALLY hard to find one today.....they move with phone calls. If you buy the questionable ones, they are easy to find.....non-bnz single claws, objective mounts, odd side rail mounts, etc. These are still cheap cause it is hard to prove them one way or the other and most collections are filled with them. Have seen plenty of bad LRSs too..but as "thek98sniper" stated, comes down to the heavy receiver on them. High turrets are also heavily faked, you just have to know what to look for. The choice of the "textbook" sniper collector is still a "bcd4" long side rail, a "byf44" high turret or a "bnz4" single claw..with the proper 3-digit coded scope....proper safety....checkered buttplate. k98s with zf41s are getting very rare too, and are heavily faked. Be careful out there!

My collection

Hey guys, have not been a member long, but really enjoy looking at the threads. My collection is of various nature. I,ll start from my early pistols and work up. I have 2 American Eagles, the 9mm and 30cal, a 1906 Navy Luger w/matching mag, a 1917 DWM artillery,a 1920 commercial DWM,a 1941 byf Mauser,a 1938 Sauer c proffed 38h,a 1942 Mauser Hsc. Two pre war {1933} PPK,S in the box with all the goodies, 2 PP,s 22cal pre war in the original box plus I have all the matching leather for them and spare mags. I have 2 Colt 1911,s. One is an early 1913 the other a 1917 G model.A 1933 Colt Ace in the box and a 1945 Colt 1911A1. Then the only S&W is a Victory 38 special with a very-very low serial number.And at last my modern pistols{that I,d like to get rid of}a Beretta 76p 22cal target, a Beretta 950 jetfire, a Beretta 92fs Inox with the 15rd mags,several black powders and a {hold on I,m almost finished} 44 magnum Desert Eagle, with a bright nickle finish. I,m not into rifles or shotguns But I do have a RWS 22cal rifle model 52 I bought for crows and since getting it I haven,t seen the first crow! Sorry I took up so much thread and I did not even list my knives. Take it easy

As stated by k98sniper, the best one to start with is the Long Side Rail (LSR). They were made by only 2 mfg's ce and bcd. Mainly bcd in 44 and 45. They could not be faked unless you made a new receiver or get a mount that comes with a adapter to go under the base to fit a normal receiver, and I have seen that. Here is a photo of a LSR receiver. It is thicker and is machined flat to give a better base.

I would love to know how much a real one is worth.....

That will depend on several things,especially with an antique weapon.
I was asked to look at one about 12 years ago at a Civil War gun show;the poor guy was so proud of it(cost him $12,000,without Davidson scope & mounts.)
It was a "parts" make up and I could'nt bring myself to tell him directly-just dropped a few hints.
Another collector(West Coast)sent color pictures of a cased Whitworth,no telescope but Globe sights.)Though a beauty it was not wartime used.
Since only around 100 or so Whitworths were used in the entire war finding a war-used one would just about make one priceless.
I know of only one in private hands(scoped)that almost certainly saw war employment.
Other war-used Whitworths can be found in Nashville(Tenn.State Museum;gun used by sharpshooter Frank Schell,Army of Tennessee,C.S.A.)and another in Dept.Of Alabama Archives,Montgomery,Ala.
That's why I'm having one made(copy from patent plans)for my own shooting amusement.
