    Coorosive ammo ???

    Hello guys.

I recently purchased a fair amount of Korean 30.06 ammo. and it wasd advertised as non-corrosive, and I even paid a bit more for the "non-corrosive" ammo.
Now a buddy tells me to treat it as corrosive !!!
Is there as way to be absolutely sure BEFORE I fire it in a weapon ???
Thanks in advance for any responses.

    Andrew,
I am not aware of any external test to determine if ammunition is corrosive. The best way is to find out the age of the ammo and the manufacturer or point of origin. When they say that ammo is corrosive, this refers to the priming not the powder as most believe. Ammo was made with corrosive primers because it simply will store for longer periods. Many weapon enthusiasts are well aware of the so called (primer ring) eaten into the bolt faces of their rifles by these primers.
But alas, I have good news. Don't worry so much about shooting corrosive ammo. Simply clean the weapon when you are done shooting. Get yourself some old GI bore cleaner at any decent gun show and use it generously. Good old fashion soap and water will also work, just use the water as hot as you can get it! Jeff

Some folks pass a couple patches of windex or diluted ammonia to kill the primer salts.

An old thread somewheres advocated pulling a bullet and dumping the powder and firing the cap against a piece of bare metal-if rust shows up it indicates corrosive.

Check out gunboards or similar sites-more than you ever could read on this subject.

      Best advice? Clean your piece.

What is the headstamp? That may be the deciding factor.

Now, if you have the Garand, treat it special as they aren't making them anymore. Clean it after every trip to the range and you will have NO PROBLEMS. You want to use soapy water or Windex with amonia right after you are done firing. Easy as pie. Just squirt it down the bore.

Clean the whole thing when you get home. That means the gas cylinder too. Break it all down. It is not hard. Read the CMP booklet. Need help? PM me.

BTW, I have fired thousands of rounds of corrosive ammo without a problem. Just clean your gun.
