Does anyone know how you can legally weld up one of these MG42 kits so you get some functionality, but it is unquestionably legal? I'm sure you could weld the whole thing into a solid block of steel, but can it be made so that some features - like the feed tray - can still operate? Anyone with any experience in these matters, pls advise! s/f Robert

MG42 kit - how to put it together?

I'm in the process of turning a rewelded MG42 parts kit dummy into a semi-auto. In this conversion there are two things that are quite important. One is that you cannot insert an unaltered full auto bolt assembly into it. This is overcome by welding a block inside the bottom of the reciever. Also, the two protrusions are ground off the underside of the bolt, as they are unneccesary for semi auto, and it gives room to clear the bolt block.
Also, you need to NOT be able to easily attach an unmodified pistol grip. For a dummy gun, you can strip the guts out, weld over the pin holes or weld a solid block in, then weld it permanently on. For the semi, the slot for the pistol grip is cut out longer so the stock pistol grip won't lock into place.
Thus you can almost get a full range of movement. If you alter the bolt, you'll need to alter the innards of the cocking handle and weld a new spot on the bolt for it to catch, but if you only have a dummy gun there is no need to move the bolt while cocking anyway. Let me find you a website that says much more than my tired fingers can peck out at the moment... Its mostly about semi auto conversions which are perfectly legal, and whats good for that will also apply to a dummy gun, unless you live in some totalitarian state like California or New York City or something...
