    Unusual 8mm rounds.

To add to what we were discussing in John's "Small, but interesting" thread, here are some more unsual, if not rare, 8mm rounds.

First, a few 15 round boxes of some unique 8mm ammo. The box on the left is for tropical high velocity phosporous armor piercing ammo. "PmK" means " Phosphor mit Stahlkern".....the small "v" is for high velocity. The next box on the right top is the tropical explosive tipped observation rounds....."B-Patrone" or "Beobachtungspatrone"..with brass casings. The lower box is for the same round but in steel casings. The blue stripe denotes steel casings.

Next are some of those above rounds. From left to right.......PmK tropical high velocity..... tropical B-Patrone in steel casing.......tropical B-Patrone in brass.....tropical B-Patrone in high velocity load. The high velosity round is denoted by the green stripe on the bullet tip. Tropical rounds are denotoed by the painted seal between the bullet and the casing. That painted seal is the samem color as the paint to seal the primer....

    A few more tropical rounds.....

On top left is a very rare 15-round box....tropical orange armor piercing tracer where the trace element starts at 100 meters and burns out at 600 meters. Below that is standard tropical armor piercing tracer. "SmK" means "Spitze mit Stahlkern" and L'spur" is for tracer. The right top is "s.S" ball ammo in tropical loading. That is standard heavy ball ammo. Below that is tropical armor piercing.

Now, some of those rounds: the first two from the left are tropical armor piercing tracer.....black tips are for tracer.....red seal between bullet and casing is for tropical. The next is the "s.S" tropical round and the last is the "SmK" tropical round. Green is for the standard ball and red is for armor piercing.

      A few more odd rounds........

The left round is a "Werkzeugpatrone" for the Luftwaffe (and so marked on the head stamp "RLM")...a tool cartridge used by ordnance personnell. The next is a brass fluted exercise round......for troops to practice loading rifle, etc. Next is a very rare "Nahpatrone", the subsonic round used for silencers. The next two on the right are grenade launching blanks with the short wooden tips........and the last two are standard blanks.

        Hi Willi,

Your photos won't open on my machinemoremad Usually I can drag them to the desk top and open them in Photoshop, but now that doesn't even work. Guess I need to have an enigma

Also, because of you, I had to eat crow as well as turkey yesterday. Told my dad those wooden tipped 8mm rounds he brought back were blanks for training, something he'd maintained all along. I've been telling him for over 20 years they were for rifle grenades....

So John, was that crow any good???

Not sure why you can't view the pics.....shall I email those 5 to you?? Can do it as a zip file. Maybe because you have a "southern" computer and mine is a "yankee" model......

Willi, excellent photos!!! some really rare stuff there. 8mm ammo is a very neglected subject. I'm so glad we are taking the time to do this right! here is a quick image of some S.m.E. 1944 and '45 stuff I have:

                            Hi Van,

No they are not unstable and not very explosive. In fact, I have heard that they are difficult to get to work when firing them on ranges.....from those who have fired them in other states. They only make a very small puff of smoke so that you can see where the round impacted. I was reading a book where they detailed the testing for these rounds to make sure that they would not go off when dropped at certain heights. They are very safe...and not prohibited in any way.....in most states.

                              Tropical Rounds?

OK, I will admit my ignorance. Hopefully you gun/ammo guys can clue me in. What makes a round "tropical", do you need different ammo to fight in a desert?

Along those same lines are there Winter ammo rounds?

                              Thanks in advance
