I enjoy collecting and shooting .22 trainers, so when I saw this last weekend at a show I had to have it. A WWI vintage Gewehr 98 converted in the post-WWI period, likely by a local gunsmith. The receiver was scrubbed of any markings. While the stock, hand guard, bands, etc, are matching, the bolt assembly, trigger guard, floor plate have no markings.
"BUG" and "Nitro" proofs are on the barrel, receiver, conversion unit. While Robert Simpson discusses the Gewehr 98 conversions in his great book, he only mentions this spring-loaded floating barrel sleeve style in his "Kar.98A" conversion section.
A very interesting conversion and I have already taken it out to the range.
